Catholic, Protestant, Pagan or Jew—
It sucks being sick at Christmas
Buddhist, Baha’i, Hindu, Muslim, UU—
It sucks being sick at Christmas,
Snowflakes are falling and church bells are rung
Shoppers are strolling and carols are sung
But I’m stuck here inside while I cough up a lung—
It sucks being sick at Christmas.

Humanist, atheist, animist, Jain—
It sucks being sick at Christmas
Mormon or Mennonite, fancy or plain—
It sucks being sick at Christmas.
They’re all wearing Santa hats, even the dogs.
Bayberry, balsam and crackling logs
But I can’t smell a thing with my sinuses clogged— (note—sing as if clogged)
It sucks being sick at Christmas.

Hark, the herald angels sing
I’ve tried almost everything
Peace on earth and mercy mild—
This sneezing and wheezing is driving me wild.

Angels we have heard on high
(That is, everyone but I)
O come, o come, Emmanuel
And watch as my agonized e-eardrums swell

Amish, Hasid, Rosicrucian, guru—
It sucks being sick at Christmas
Warlock or witch, Zoroastrian too—
It sucks being sick at Christmas
Neighbors all sing “Dona Nobis Pacem”
I’d give my right arm just to party with them
But that bowl full of eggnog reminds me of (clear throat) phlegm—
It sucks being sick on Christmas
